Dear 6th Grade Parents and Students,
Welcome to middle school English Language Arts! All of my classes participate in Reading Workshop because it has proven to be an excellent teaching method which helps students practice critical reading skills and develop a lifelong love of books. Students will learn how to choose books that are “just right” for them ensuring a proper match between reading levels and personal interests.
Students are expected to read a minimum of 180 minutes for homework daily (including weekends). Each student will be a member of our online reading community at "Whooo's Reading" @ www.whooosreading.org where students log their daily minutes and respond to questions. Every Monday, I will grade students' reading progress based on their total minutes (120 per week minimum for Honors students and 90 minutes for CP students) and quality of the written response. Parents, please see that your child is reading for at least 20 minutes every day (including weekends) and encourage him/her to log minutes daily. You can ask your child to invite you via email to have access to his/her profile, so you can monitor logged minutes, written responses, and book titles. It is an easy and effective way to know your child as a reader!
Just why does your child need to read consistently for extended periods of time? It will broaden his or her vocabulary, improve comprehension, and strengthen writing ability. Research shows the highest achieving students are those who devote time to reading. Numerous studies have found that the single most important predictor of academic success is the amount of time that students spend reading!
Parents, please sit down with your child and talk about the best time and place for reading in your home. Is right after school a good time to curl up with a book and escape into a great story? Or will your child prefer to read before bed? Also, consider your reading environment. Is the area free from distractions such as video games, music and TV? A quiet, comfortable place is best for students to maintain uninterrupted focus and enter what I call “The Reading Zone.”
While I use state, school, and personal money to build an engaging classroom library for my students, it is always a work in progress. There is no better donation for our classroom than books! Please feel free to send in high interest, current books that might be taking up space in your home. I assure you that your generous contributions will be appreciated by the other eager readers in my classroom.
Please feel free to call or email me if I can be of any assistance. I look forward to working with you in guiding your child through a successful year of language arts at CrossRoads Intermediate School.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Bullard
